At the opening bell ring for "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps," Oliver Stone's sequel to his 1987 "Wall Street," the movie bid successfully for the top spot at the North American box office on Friday.
The PG-13 Fox release, in which Michael Douglas reprises his Oscar-winning turn as Gordon Gekko alongside Shia LaBeouf and Carey Mulligan, took in an estimated $7 million in 3,565 theaters. That puts it on track for a weekend haul somewhere around the $20 million mark.
"Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole," from Warners and Village Roadshow, flew into the third spot as it nested in 3,575 theaters. The PG-rated 3D animated movie directed by Zack Snyder captured $4.6 million.
"You Again," the weekend's other new wide opener, had to settle for fifth place. Disney's PG comedy, starring Jamie Lee Curtis, Sigourney Weaver, Kristen Bell and Odette Yustman as two sets of high school rivals who clash at a wedding, picked up about $2.8 million.
Rounding out the top five, Ben Affleck's "The Town," released by Warners, which dominated the boxoffice last weekend, moved to second place as it pulled in another $5 million. Demonstrating a solid hold, the movie fell just 40% from its opening Friday.
The Sony/Screen Gems high school comedy "Easy A" was fourth with $3.6 million.
Further down the list, another new Sony comedy, the R-rated "The Virginity Hit" took in just $105,000, but the movie, directed by Huck Botko and Andrew Gurland and starring Matt Bennett and Zack Pearlman, also opened in just 650 theaters.
