Minissha Lamba might have to pay a fine and penalty for not declaring diamond jewellery to the Customs on arrival at the Mumbai airport on Wednesday. If she doesn’t pay up, Anmol Jewellers — who reportedly lent her the diamonds for the Cannes Film Festival — will have to fork out the fine if they want the jewellery back.
“Lamba has accepted the charge of non-declaration and said she had carried the jewels from India when she went to Cannes,” said Mahendra Pal, Additional Commissioner of Customs, Air Intelligence Unit. “The fine and penalty will be decided by the adjudication authority of the Customs,” he said.
The Customs have pegged the “assorted jewellery made of gold and studded with diamonds, precious and semi-precious stones and other dutiable goods” at around Rs 31.32 lakh.
In her statement to the Customs, the actress said that the jewels belonged to Anmol Jewellers and she carried them to Cannes for promotional purposes. After she was detained, she was interrogated till 1.30 am on Thursday. Lamba again showed up at the Customs Commissionerate around 3 pm on Thursday and her statement was recorded till 6.30 pm.
