Lady Gaga, fans love fest

Fresh from her eight wins at MTV's Video Music Awards on Sunday, Lady Gaga's Monster Ball Tour came rolling into the XL Center on Thursday night. "I created the Monster Ball Tour so my fans would have a place to go," Gaga said.

Gaga may have disappointed her "little monsters" - that's what she affectionately calls her fans - earlier this year after canceling an appearance at Mohegan Sun Casino, but she didn't disappoint the near-capacity crowd this time around, many of whom were on their feet from the first strains of her opening number "Dancing in the Dark."

Telling her audience, "I sing live at my shows," this "Lady" really can sing and was at her best sitting at the piano in a black and sparkling two-piece-like bathing suit belting out "Speechless" and a new song to appear on her upcoming 2011 album "Born this Way" called "You and I."

"I wrote this song about a good looking guy, but tonight I'm thinking of you when I sing it," Gaga told her adoring fans.

Given the singer's view of "performance as art," Gaga's theatrical spectacle was infused with her innovative and creative spirit.

There were multi-costume changes from a white nun's outfit to a Madonna-inspired cone bra and panties spouting fireworks, a multi-level stage with a jungle gym-like contraption which she climbed upon to sing "Beautiful, Dirty, Rich," a piano on fire, a giant LED chandelier, and a smoking jalopy which revealed a large keyboard when Gaga raised its hood.

Not to mention a proscenium that extended into the audience allowing the artist and her entourage of dancers and back-up singers to get closer to the fans.
